Current Global Affairs

So, I am finally a senior with the conclusion of my final exams today. Yes, that’s right, a final exam on a Saturday. They all went well…thanks for asking. To commemorate the beginning of my undergraduate career as a senior, I decided not to write on a particular topic, but rather, on a myriad of global topics in an unorthodox manner.

So…how about that swine flu hysteria? If gang violence couldn’t stop tourism into Mexico, this certainly will. The violent gangs in Mexico are being out-shined by microscopic agents and I think those gangs mind being out of the spotlight and will take this opportunity to regroup as Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon redirects the country’s resources towards containing A/H1N1 and reviving the Mexican economy. About 780 people worldwide have been affected to date.

So…what happened to all that media attention regarding the pirates of the Indian Ocean? I believe there is nothing that can be done to curtail the hijackings as long as anarchy and political instability continue to exist in fragile countries such as Somalia. Developed countries must first tackle this issue before wasting resources on the attempt to thwart piracy. There are currently about 17 ships still under pirate control in the region to date.

So…how about the U.S. banking system? 31 banks thus far have failed in 2009, increasing the total of failed banks to about 60 since the beginning of 2008. I predict that the U.S. government will use this as an opportunity to strategically oligopolize the banking system, or a particular sector within it, to create a  similar structure comparable to the Big Four’s control over the accountancy market in terms of auditing. Who knows?! At least the Dow seems to be in an upward, stable trend!

Until next time!
